January 11, 2010 - Student Killed in Conn. School Bus Crash

A Connecticut high school student was killed Saturday morning when a bus carrying a group to a robotics competition collided with a car, officials said.

Two other students at the Greater Hartford Academy of Mathematics and Science, a magnet school, were critically injured, The Hartford Courant reported.

The crash occurred on Interstate 84 in Hartford at about 8 a.m. Police said the bus, headed to Farmington High School west of Hartford with 16 students and two adults, collided with a station wagon in the westbound lanes of the highway. The bus plunged 20 feet down an embankment, state police said.

Investigators were trying to determine what caused the two vehicles to crash. Troopers said I-84 was clear and dry at the time.

The bus driver was in stable condition at Hartford Hospital, said David Medina, a spokesman for the Hartford public school system. He said most of the students suffered minor injuries.

The identity of the student who was killed had not been released Saturday. Officials said he was from Rocky Hill, a suburb south of Hartford.

The academy is a regional magnet school that takes students from Hartford and surrounding towns.
