October 08 2007 - Student Sentenced for Car Crash

Sayed Khaled El-Waraky, an Egyptian national, pleaded guilty to first-degree reckless endangerment after ramming his luxury car into four people at a golf club on Thursday. He was sentenced to 2 1/3 to seven years in prison.

Prosecutors said he slammed his Jaguar into a crowd gathered outside a bar at the Glen Cove Golf Club on Long Island in June 2006, leaving four people with wounds that included skull fractures. They said he had started a fight and gotten thrown out of the bar.

El-Waraky, 25, who attended American University before the legal proceedings, had already been sentenced to 1 1/3 to four years in prison after being convicted in May of driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident.

A jury deadlocked on assault charges.

Prosecutors agreed to dismiss those charges, which could have brought a prison term as long as 25 years. El-Waraky will serve both his sentences concurrently.
