January 22, 2009 - Student Sues University in Flesh-Eating Bacteria Case

January 22, 2009 - Student Sues University in Flesh-Eating Bacteria Case

A student is suing Ohio University for medical negligence, alleging that a failure to diagnose a case of flesh-eating bacteria led to the amputation of her right arm and shoulder.

Molly Millsop, a student from Vandalia, and her parents filed the lawsuit against the public university in the Ohio Court of Claims last week.

The lawsuit claims that Millsop went to the Hudson Health Center on the Athens campus three times within 12 hours on Sept. 6, 2007, but a physician failed to detect that she was suffering from necrotizing fasciitis.

The center diagnosed throat inflammation, muscle strain and anxiety, the lawsuit claims. Later that day, her parents took her to an Athens hospital, and she was transferred to a Columbus hospital where she underwent surgery.

The lawsuit seeks more than $25,000 in damages. OU officials did not respond to a request for comment.
