January 18, 2010 - Plane Odor Causes Air Travelers' Sickness

An odor on a U.S. Airways flight from the Caribbean to North Carolina caused several people aboard to experience headaches and nausea, officials said.

Seven crew members were taken to a hospital, and five passengers were treated when the Flight 1041 from St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, landed at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport Saturday, WCNC-TV, Charlotte, reported.

The crew members noticed the slight odor shortly after takeoff, but it turned out not to be carbon monoxide, as had been originally reported, the Charlotte Fire Department said.

The flight had seven crew members and 174 passengers on board, the television station said.

U.S. Airways took the airplane out of service to determine the cause of the problem along with investigators from the fire department, WCNC-TV reported.
