November 5, 2003 - N.Y. Bans Ephedra
New York Gov. George Pataki has signed into law a ban on over-the-counter sales of ephedra, but not prescription ephedra. The New York law calls for a $500 fine for each over-the-counter sale of ephedra, including supplements marketed under such brand names as Stacker 2, Stacker 3, Ripped Fuel, and Xenadrine.
The herbal supplement, which is used for weight loss and to enhance athletic performance, has been linked to numerous deaths.
Illinois was the first state to ban ephedra, and other states are expected to take similar action.
